The start of a new year can be an exciting time...and need not be a daunting one. With the first day of childcare just around the corner, it's time to start preparing your back-to-childcare to-do list. Follow these six educator-approved tips to prepare your child for a successful term!
Meet the new educator
One of the biggest back-to-childcare fears for kids is meeting a new educator. Meeting your new educator is a great way to calm your child's fear and get to know them before the school year begins. If personal contact with the teacher isn't possible, try looking up the teacher’s credentials on a school website or write them an email.
Set earlier bedtimes and wake up times
Set earlier bedtimes and wake up times gradually. Adjust bedtime up to 10 or 15 minutes every few days until you reach the appropriate bedtime and wake up time for school days. This allows your child to transition easier once school begins.
Attending orientation days
The best way to help your child get ready for childcare is to attend the orientation sessions. An orientation session allows you and your child to meet your educator before you begin care. Your child can meet classmates; and get to know the classroom, where they will enjoy playing and learning.
Shop together
Shopping for supplies on your own may be faster but taking your kids along is better. Your child will be more excited about school and using the stuff they picked out. You can also explain how their new supplies, such as a water bottle, sunhat and backpack might be used and let them practice packing them, so your child can be comfortable once it's time to use them in class.
Have a designated area for their school gear
You can use a wall in your house to hang jackets, backpacks, school supplies, you name it. This way, your child will always know where their gear is and won't waste precious time looking for missing stuff in the morning. This will also help your child stay organised and inform you when items are out of stock.
Take it easy
Take your time to ease into the new routine. Switching from a summer to a school schedule can be challenging for most parents. Prevent the first day of school chaos by practising your routine a few weeks in advance. Set your alarm clock earlier, perform morning rituals, and get in the car or bus stop on time. Having a school routine will make the first day of early learning childcare much easier for everyone.
